2. Story (with a meaningful lesson)

Jack Canfield in his bestselling book Chicken Soup for the Soul tells this incredible story.

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.

The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, "I want to tell you why I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

"That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.

"He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two day later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after class.'

"The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, `Why did I receive an F?'

"The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to pay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it.' Then the teacher added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.'

"The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.'

"Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, `You can keep the F and I'll keep my dream.'"

Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, "I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace." He added, "The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week." When the teacher was leaving, he said, `Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids' dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.'"

Lesson: Don't let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.

Make The Time

Without a doubt the most common reason or excuse for not achieving a goal that I hear everyday is: "I don't have time." If you don't make time for your goals - if you don't make time to do the work, take the action, follow up and plan your life - then your goals aren't important and in the end you're not important.

When your teeth hurt you make the time to go see the dentist -and then pay him for his/her services. When you're not feeling well you make the time to go see the doctor. When your car breaks down you make the time to go see the mechanic. When your life breaks down, when things fall apart, when you're not happy, when you're not fulfilled it's because you simply haven't made time for your goals. You haven't made time to do the things that will heal you. You can make the time now or you can continue living the life you have. If you're not happy then make the time for yourself and your goals.

Your life is a process and the time to make the most of that process is now. Part of that process involves setting goals and achieving them. If you don't do that you feel empty and unfulfilled. When you're striving towards something that you know will be rewarding you gain more energy and you're filled with life again. Goals are important to have - but it's more important to make the time to achieve them. I get countless calls and emails from people who tell me that they don't have the ime to do something everyday toward achieving their goals. If you feel that way then you're basically saying that you don't have time to improve your life - you don't have time for life.

If that truly is the case - then you've let the whims of others take control of your life. If you really don't have the time then write down all the reasons why you don't. You'll soon discover it's because you are too busy responding to what everybody else wants and you've lost all control of your life. The only way to change that is to start regaining control -- and you do that by making some time for yourself and for achieving your goals. The minute you do that you'll start to feel better about your life. You'll begin to gain a sense of purpose and you'll start to move forward again.


Use your time wisely. No one is asking you to ignore your priorities - but cut out a half an hour of television. Try to make some time during your lunch break or down time. Here's where I get something like the following: "Karim I don't have a minute to breath - I'm under the gun everyday and the only time I get to myself is when I go to sleep - and that's only for 6 hours if I'm lucky." Okay - then make it 5 and a half hours of sleep. My point is - if you're goal is important to you - you'll make the time for it. Train Your Mind

A crucial element to your success when it comes to achieving your goals is to train the mind to work differently and in turn get your subconscious mind working for you. How do you do this? By doing all of the above and staying focused. Now there are a number of other techniques that you can work with and I go through each one in my Creating Power system.
