The moment that we get overwhelmed each day you can almost bet that it's because we have filled our mental bowl to capacity and we're not able to process everything else that continues to come at us. Life does not have to be that way. Time is linear. Events happen, actions are taken and small steps lead to big journeys. What's the best way to eat an elephant? Take just one bite at a time.

And so it is with our daily lives. If we take each day "one bite at a time" we have a much better chance of finishing off that daily elephant while still having some time left for ourselves.

Affirmations on: "Be here now"

  • Today I move through life one step at a time.
  • I take delight in being in the moment
  • I can feel the tension fading as I stop to breathe and reflect.
  • Today I will make a plan and follow it.
  • I ask for help if I need it.
  • Today I will say "YES" only if I feel it is OK.
  • Today I will tend to my needs first.
  • My goals are important to me.
  • I am a intelligent and worthy person.
  • I feel calm knowing I have planned my day.

I am pretty sure that I do not have the physical strength to swim the English Channel non stop. I do believe that I could swim it if I were allowed to do so one mile per day. What's the difference? Almost anything is possible if you take a sensible and planned approach to it.

If you wake up at 6 AM and you are already worrying about making dinner at 6PM then you are doing yourself an injustice. There are 12 hours between now and then and there is no reason to make them any more stressful than they already want to be.

Time is linear. What does that really mean? It means that every minute of the day is going to pass whether you worry about it or not. It's going to pass whether you use it to its fullest potential or whether you simply waste it like water dripping from the faucet. It's going to march right by you in a straight line and fall off the end of the day like lemmings falling off the end of a cliff. You won't see any of those minutes ever again.

You can not relive the past and you can not travel into the future. That pretty much leaves you right smack in the middle of the "here and now" and it's the here and now that should be getting your attention.

If you plan your day then you have a better chance of reaching your goals, reducing your stress and having some valuable time to spend on what you really want to do. It's not that hard.

Take out your fork and start on that elephant the moment you wake up.

Today I need to:

  1. Put the coffee pot on.
  2. Take a shower.
  3. Get dressed.
  4. Make a grocery list for tonight's dinner.
  5. Leave for work by 8 AM.
  6. Call John about the Anderson contract…

You get the point. While you might think that I'm talking about simple time management, it's really much more. It's life management really. Time is just a small slice of the pie.

You see, when you fail to manage the events that go on around you then you become subject to random chaos. This chaos creates stress which creates physical symptoms which manifest themselves as poor health. Poor health interferes with your ability to manage your life which, in turn, causes more stress which leads to guess what? More poor health.

Everything in your environment has a connection to you and an affect on you. Events can create thoughts and emotions as much as thoughts and emotions can create events. It is up to you to either drive your day or be driven by it.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Take your daily elephant and cut it into bit-sized pieces that you can easily digest.

When you start worrying about the future, pull yourself back to the here and now. The future will still be there when you reach it.

Celebrate each day's triumphs and learn from the setbacks.

Stop, relax, breathe and think. Do it frequently.

Live each day as it comes and you will be less overwhelmed

They say that when you fail to plan then you plan to fail. I think that's true. It's like you're saying "OK day, I'm yours. Do with me whatever you will". While that may be a great line to use with a lover, you're only asking for trouble if you use it on life.

You see, we really are in control of what happens to us. Even "accidents" aren't really accidental. You can program your mind and body to do anything that you want to do. You can make your way through the longest task lists and the toughest days by simply adjusting you attitude. In my life there are times when that "adjustment" is what I need but it's a bit beyond my capability to get. That's because in spite of my best intensions, life still gets one in on me from time to time.
