Exercise & Putting your mind to it - Includes sample Affirmations

Exercise isn't just a physical thing. In fact, unless your mind is 100% attuned to your physical goals the chances are you won't be seeing much improvement.

Exercise affirmations are like tummy crunches for the brain. Here are my favourite for staying in shape:

  • Today I feel better than yesterday
  • I am feeling strong and alive
  • My muscle tone looks great
  • My body responds to my fitness goals
  • Exercise makes me think more clearly
  • I look and feel great today
  • I have plenty of energy to zoom through the day
  • I am rewarded for the exercise I do
  • I feel rejuvenated and energized
  • I love making time to exercise

Exercise = mental health

Of course exercise tones our body and increases our physical well being, but there is a lot of mental exercise going on that you might not be aware of.

  • Exercise gets our blood flowing and stimulates the supply of oxygen to the brain.
  • Increased blood and oxygen levels increase brain activity.
  • This all combines to stimulate the release of endorphins which regulate our mood.

When endorphins and oxygen are flowing it is difficult for us to be gloomy or depressed. Once our mind wakes up our body follows. Exercise is the great unifier. It brings together the body, the mind and the spirit.

Many of us do not exercise because we have convinced ourselves that we do not have the "time". We are all given the same amount of time each day. Some of us spend it wisely and some of us do not. While it is true that you cannot be in two places at the same time, you certainly can do two things at the same time. If you find the time to watch the TV news each night, or an episode of your favourite show, then consider watching it while you exercising on a treadmill. Not only will you reap the benefits of exercise, but you'll be doing it without needing any more time that you already have!

Time is not always the issue though. Some of us don't like to exercise because we find it boring or unpleasant. Here's how motivational speaker Anthony Robbins recommends approaching tasks that we would rather avoid.

Rate how you feel about exercise on a scale of 1 to 10. Let's say that you rate it a 5. Now think about what it would take to make it a 6, or an 8 or 10?

Suppose that you enjoy books and reading. If you went to the library and checked out a book on tape or CD, then you could listen to it while you walked around your neighbourhood. Think about how quickly the time and distance would pass if you had something reading to you while you exercised.

It wasn't too long ago that humans didn't travel by car and few of us had desk jobs. We walked all day and worked in the fields or at other labour-intensive jobs. Obesity was rare and confined mostly to the idle rich who did not work at physically demanding jobs. The every day person was physically fit without doing any regimented "exercise". Just living was exercise enough.

Today we are all penalized by inactivity. We get stiff and sore, our knees crack, and many of us have a bit too much flesh hanging off of spots where we rather it wasn't hanging. Heart disease and stroke have become major issues and clinical depression is rampant among people of all ages. Exercise can be the cure for all of this. You just need to get and stay motivated.

If you have been inactive for some time and are thinking about starting an exercise program, check with your healthcare provider first. He or she can work with you to get you off to a sensible start so you don't get too frisky and end up doing yourself more harm than good.

Tip: Exercise doesn't have to mean jogging or sit-ups or weightlifting. Simple walking and stretching is a good place to start. In fact, walking has many of the same health benefits as running or jogging does and it's less physically demanding.

If the thought of walking turns you off, and your tail isn't wagging over checking out audio books to keep you company, then swimming, or biking, or even gardening can be great substitutes.

Anthony Robbins' rating technique really does work if you let it. You don't have to go from a 5 straight to a 10. Increase the pleasurability a step at a time until you can't wait for exercise time to come. Believe it or not, it will happen that way if you let it.

Affirmations are powerful exercise partners. Not only do they serve to keep you motivated, but they actively work to exercise your mind. The problem is we often get sucked into the chaos of the work day and find ourselves forgetting all about taking time to repeat our affirmations until we're on our way home for the night. Even then it can slip our mind.

Jesus and Satan were having an on-going argument about who was better on the computer. They had been going at it for days, and frankly God was tired of hearing all the bickering.
