A Positive Attitude Makes ALL the Difference

When it comes to being happy, it's hard to beat a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA). Once you recognize the fact that you control your life, not the other way around, the sun gets a little bit brighter, the sky becomes bluer, and you heart sings happy sings happy songs. Is there anyone who doesn't want that to happen to them? I hope not.

Before we discover how your PMA can make your life a lot happier, let's take a look at some of my favourite attitude affirmations:

  • Positive energy flows into my life every moment.
  • I am the master of my life.
  • I determine how to react to situations.
  • I create my own happiness by choosing how I react.
  • I am happy because I deserve to be happy.
  • I feel physically well because I am emotionally well.
  • I make my own happiness.

The Benefits of Maintaining a Positive Attitude

Last week we talked about how choosing the thoughts we think affects not only our mood but also our physical well being. This week we'll see how our attitude about events in our lives also affects how we feel.

On the surface it might seem that the events which occur in your in your life ultimately determine how you feel about life. But the actual truth is just the opposite. There is plenty of research showing that it is your attitude about life's events that determine how you feel.

A colleague of mine once lived with his wife and children in New York City. He was an executive with a Fortune 1000 multi national corporation.

In December of 2001, right before the Christmas Holidays, he lost his job because of the economic downturn that had followed the tragic events of September 11th 2001. His face was all doom and gloom as he entered his home that evening. After relaying the story to his wife he waited for what was sure to be an emotional outburst of worry, fear and grief.

Instead, her face lit up and she said "We've always dreamed of moving to a warmer climate and starting our own business, now we are free to do it!" That's exactly what they did and they are living "happily ever after" to this day.

What's the simple lesson to be learned here?

"When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade."

It doesn't take much to imagine what life could have been like in my friend's household from that night forward. He had two children in high school and one who was still in elementary school. He was 45 years old and the thought of competing in a declining job market against younger candidates who required less money, was not a pleasant one. Their Christmas celebration could have been ruined and there could have been great stress placed upon their marriage and their physical and mental health. Instead, they were busy and excited about preparing for their new lives. Even their teenagers eventually succumbed to the positive mental energy of their parents and began to anticipate living in the land of sun and surf.

There is plenty of evidence to show that people who are more optimistic experience a higher quality of mental health. We learned last week that our thoughts affect our physical health, and it stands to reason that they also affect our mental health. Now there is evidence showing that our mental health affects our physical health as well. In the end it becomes apparent that our physical and mental health is intertwined and it all begins and ends with how we think.

Of all the negative feelings that we can experience, it is likely that hopelessness is the worst. With hope, anything is possible but without it all is lost. That is the biggest difference between an optimist and a pessimist. The optimist views negative situations as temporary and looks for ways not only to overcome them, but to turn them into positive events like my friend's wife did in NY.

The pessimist views negative situations as permanent and "out of his control". He has no choice but to ride the bad weather out knowing for sure that even more bad weather is behind it. He is hopeless and, as a result, there is little joy in his life.

The other major difference between optimistic and pessimistic people is the degree of severity in which they view negative events. An optimistic person quarantines the event from the rest of the events in his or her life and views it in the specific context that it exists in. The pessimist sees each negative event as one more in a series of negative events that continues to overpower him because "life isn't fair". He has no hope of controlling the events of his life.

One does not have to look much further than the children's stories about Winnie the Pooh to see actual examples of what I mean. Who in the world could possibly have been more optimistic than the "silly old bear", and who could be more of a pessimist than Eeyoore, the perennially unhappy donkey?

The key to the way that an optimist is able to mitigate the negative emotions of any particular setback, as well as avoid the stress that would normally result, lies in their ability to externalize the situation while a pessimist tends to internalize things that go wrong.

An optimist who is involved in a minor traffic accident is immediately relieved that no one has been injured. Sheet metal can be repaired, but lives are fragile. The accident was just that, an accident and is not proof of a greater evil intent that life has against us.

A pessimist sees the accident as evidence that people and events are out to get them and lets the anger and stress wash away their common sense. The resulting negative stress is sure to be both physically and emotionally overwhelming.

The key to maintaining a balanced state of mental and physical health is to keep your objectivity when things go wrong. You don't have to be unrealistic about the possible consequences of any event, but you don't have to bury yourself in negative emotions either.

Look to late actor Christopher Reeves for an example of how a positive mental attitude can be found regardless of the tragedy that befalls us. An optimist will find a way to turn lemons into lemonade. You don't believe me? Ask Candy Lightner, the woman whose daughter was killed by a serial drunk driver. She took the essence of her daughter's lost life and used it to create Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) which is now a global organization that is credited with taking thousands of drunk drivers off the road.

Here's a tip for maintaining a positive mental attitude. I call it my Three Steps to a PMA.

  1. Realize that the setbacks in your life are temporary and that you can persevere even if it requires a lifestyle change like Christopher Reeves faced.
     
  2. Keep negative events isolated and remember that they are stand-alone events and not part of a chain of negativity which has singled you out for attack.
     
  3.  Recognize that your thoughts control your attitude as well as your health. Repeat your affirmations out loud every day and especially on those days when life hands you lemons.

Sometimes I find it hard to remember my affirmations. Dividing your life between work and a home life often leaves us very little time to manage our own happiness. That's why I use a mental health "trainer" to help me out.
